# Footer

Set up the footer - menu columns, newsletter, social links, policies, country and language selectors, payment icons and the oversized wordmark.

The footer closes every page. It can hold menu columns, a newsletter signup, social links, a brand statement and a bottom row with copyright, policy links, selectors and payment icons.

## Open the footer settings

1. Go to **Online Store › Themes › Customize**.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the left sidebar and click **Footer** (in the **Footer** group).

## Start from a preset

When you add a new footer section (**Add section** in the Footer group), you can pick one of six starting points. Each is the same section with different settings and blocks:

| Preset | What it sets up |
| ------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Footer** | Menu columns and social links. |
| **Footer: directory** | Five menu columns, small links, a line of small print and a three-group bottom row. Good for large stores. |
| **Footer: newsletter lead** | A newsletter group first, three menu columns, the small logo in the bottom row and social links as names. |
| **Footer: statement** | A large brand statement above four columns, with policy links separated by dots. |
| **Footer: oversized wordmark** | Three menus and a text column, with your logo or store name across the full width at the very bottom. |
| **Footer: minimal line** | One menu, the small logo before the columns and payment methods as names after them. |

## Content: blocks

Add content to the footer as blocks. Click **Footer**, then **Add block**:

| Block                  | What it shows                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      |
| ---------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Menu** | A column of links from a menu. Settings: **Heading** (default "Shop"), **Menu** (default your Footer menu) and **Layout** (**Column** or **Row**). |
| **Text** | A paragraph, for example opening hours or a short "about us". |
| **Email signup** | A newsletter field. Subscribers are added to **Customers** in Shopify admin with email marketing consent and the tag `newsletter`. Settings: **Button label**, **Note below the field**, **Success message**, **Maximum width** and **Alignment**. |
| **Social media icons** | Icons (or names) linking to the profiles you enter in **Theme settings › Social media**. |
| **Follow on Shop** | A button that lets customers follow your store in the Shop app. Requires Shop Pay. |
| **Group** | A container to stack or line up other blocks, for example a heading, text and email signup together. |

Any other theme block (Heading, Image, Button and so on) and app blocks can be added too. Drag blocks to reorder the columns.

{% hint style="info" %}
Footer menus come from **Online Store › Navigation**. Create one menu per column, for example "Shop", "Help" and "About", then choose each one in its **Menu** block.
{% endhint %}

## Section settings

## Why a setting shows nothing

Some footer options depend on your store setup. If you switch them on and nothing appears, check the following:

**Country/region selector.** It appears only when your store sells to more than one country or region. In **Settings › Markets**, add a market (or add countries to a market) and make sure it is active. With a single country, the footer shows that country and currency as plain text instead, for example "Vietnam · VND". For each country to show its own currency, the store needs Shopify Payments with local currencies turned on.

**Language selector.** It appears only with more than one published language. In **Settings › Languages**, add a language and click **Publish**. Shopify's free **Translate & Adapt** app helps translate content.

**Payment methods.** The icons come from the payment methods your store accepts. Activate Shopify Payments or another provider in **Settings › Payments**, and make sure card brands and wallets are turned on there. On a development store you can use Shopify Payments test mode or the Bogus Gateway.

**Policy links.** Only policies with content are listed. Fill them in at **Settings › Policies**.

**Social links.** Enter full profile URLs in **Theme settings › Social media** (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, X (Twitter), Threads, LinkedIn, Vimeo). Empty fields are skipped.

The selectors save automatically: choosing a country or language reloads the page in that currency or language straight away.

{% hint style="warning" %}
The bottom row only shows when at least one of its items is on: copyright, policy links, selectors, social names, the small logo in the bottom row, or payment methods in the bottom row.
{% endhint %}

## Tips

* Keep three to five columns on desktop. On phones the columns stack; long footers become a long scroll.
* Use **Footer: directory** with **Link size › Small** for stores with many categories.
* Add a link to `#cookie-preferences` in a footer menu (for example "Cookie settings") so visitors can reopen the cookie preferences at any time, see [Cookie consent](/overlays/cookie-consent.md).
