# FAQ

Short answers to the questions store owners ask most about Stratum.

## Setup

**Do I need to know code to use Stratum?** No. Everything is set up in the theme editor. Code is only needed for things the theme doesn't do; for those, hire a Shopify Partner and duplicate your theme first.

**Which preset should I pick?** There is nothing to pick: Stratum comes with one preset, also called **Stratum**, made for shops with a broad catalog. It uses only the theme's own sections, so you can restyle it or rebuild the home page for trade and B2B buyers later. See [The Stratum preset](/getting-started/presets.md).

**Can I try Stratum before buying?** Yes. From the Theme Store, click **Try theme**. You can customize it fully; you buy it when you want to publish.

**How many sections can a page have?** Up to 25 per template (a Shopify limit). The Stratum home page preset uses all 25, so remove one before adding another.

## Design

**Can I use my brand fonts?** Yes, any font from Shopify's font library: **Theme settings › Typography**. The default system fonts load fastest. See [Typography](/store-wide-design/brand.md#typography).

**Why do my headings look lighter or heavier than I chose?** **Heading weight** needs that weight to exist in your font. Fonts without Medium or Semibold use the closest available weight. Choose **Match heading font** to use exactly the weight from the font picker.

**How do I make a section dark?** Set its **Color scheme** to a dark scheme, such as Scheme 3 (Dark). See [Colors](/store-wide-design/brand.md#colors).

**Can I turn off the animations?** Yes, each one: **Theme settings › Animations**. They are already off automatically for visitors who reduce motion on their device. See [Animations and motion](/store-wide-design/animations.md).

## Products

**How do I show color swatches?** Use Shopify's swatches on your options, or list the option name in **Theme settings › Swatches › Show swatches for options named**. See [Variants and color swatches](/products/swatches.md).

**Why don't star ratings show?** No review app is writing the standard product rating metafields. Install a review app that supports them.

**Can Stratum send back-in-stock emails?** No. The **Restock request** block sends the shopper's request to you by email. Use an app if you want automatic notifications.

**How do I add a "New" badge?** Tag the product `new` (or the tag you set in **Theme settings › Product cards › Product tag for New badge**).

**Can shoppers compare products?** Yes, up to four at a time. Turn it on in **Theme settings › Product compare** and pick a compare page. See [Product compare](/products/compare.md).

## Collections and search

**Where do filters come from?** From Shopify's free **Search & Discovery** app. Add the filters there; Stratum shows them. See [Collection pages and filters](/collections-and-search/collection-page.md).

**Can shoppers switch between a grid and a list?** Yes. The collection toolbar lets shoppers choose 3, 4 or 5 columns on large screens, or a list view.

## Cart and checkout

**Can I choose between a cart drawer and a cart page?** Yes: **Theme settings › Cart › Cart type**: **Drawer**, **Popup notification** or **Page**. See [Cart](/cart/cart.md).

**Can I show a free delivery progress bar?** Yes: enter an amount in **Theme settings › Cart › Free delivery progress bar threshold**. It's a message only; set up the actual rate in **Settings › Shipping and delivery**.

**Can I customize the checkout?** The checkout is run by Shopify, not by the theme. Its colors and logo are set in **Settings › Checkout › Customize**.

## International

**How do I show prices in other currencies?** Add the countries in **Settings › Markets** and turn on local currencies with Shopify Payments. The country/region selector then appears. See [Markets, languages and currency](/selling-internationally/markets-and-languages.md).

**How do I translate the store?** Publish languages in **Settings › Languages** and translate with Shopify's free **Translate & Adapt** app.

## Updates and support

**Will I lose my changes when I update Stratum?** No. Shopify's update adds the new version as a copy with your settings and content. Code edits are not carried over. See [Install Stratum](/getting-started/install.md#update-to-a-new-version).

**Is Stratum accessible?** Yes. It is built for keyboard, screen reader and reduced-motion users, and checked with automated testing against WCAG 2.1 A and AA. See [Accessibility](/help/accessibility.md).
